Survivor by ChuckPalahniuk

I haven't read any of Chuck Palhniuk's books and I figured this one was as good as any since it was available on overdrive.com.

Tender Branson is a member of a religious cult that kill themselves when the FBI starts to investigate them. Years after the mass suicide, Tender is still alive because he wasn't with the others, and is too chicken to kill himself like he has been brainwashed to do. He lives a miserable life working for a wealthy couple as a housekeeper of sorts, and operating a fake hotline for people wanting to kill themselves. As a hobby, he convinces these people to kill themselves and then waits to verify their demise in the obituaries. Things take a turn when he visits the grave of recently deceased caller, and runs into their beautiful sister, Fertility. While Tender tries to get closer to Fertility, it seems there is someone murdering the surviving members of the religious cult and making it look like suicides. Later, Tender is the lone survivor of the cult and is catapulted into religious stardom.

This book had an interesting plot, with a humorous look at fame and religion. There were a few far fetched ideas like when they turned the property of the cult into a dump for the proper disposal of pornographic material. I enjoyed the book, even though it had an abrupt ending, and will probably try another Palahniuk novel in the future.
