Well, it's been about a month since we left to Walla Walla and I'm just now deciding to post about it. It was me, Rachel, Becca, and mom in my car and Nephi, Steffanie, Kalia, and Teo in my mom's car. It ended up being about an 11 hour trip with a few breaks on the way. The kids actually did really well on the long drive down. What did parents ever do before portable dvd players?
In this picture Teo is a little bored because we turned the dvd player off.
We rented a house instead of staying at hotel. It worked out really well since it was just a block away from the grandparents house. We would sometimes just walk back and forth instead of driving. It was also cheaper than a hotel would have been and we had a kitchen, and a wii. What else could you need?
The house had 2 bedrooms upstairs. The house was remodeled recently and they did a good job. There were two other bedrooms that were in the basement with air mattresses. The first night Becca, Rachel and I slept in the basement but after that we brought one of the air mattresses upstairs and slept in the living room. The basement hadn't been remodeled yet and it kind of creeped us out. Sariah, Steven and Ben stayed with the grandparents.
Our activities on our trip included dinner where our aunt and uncle and cousin came over with the grandparents and aunt Rosanne. We made smores in the backyard and followed up with a battle at Wii bowling. Other days included battling at badminton, a picnic at Pioneer Park, and a tour of our old stomping grounds throughout Walla Walla. Most of the time we looked through all the photo albums. Becca brought her scanner and spent several hours scanning photo albums. We enjoyed looking through their old photo albums. It was fun to see all the pictures that grandpa had sent grandma while he was serving in the Navy and they were writing. Grandpa wrote cute little messages on the back of the photos. We also got grandma to get out her wedding dress which was fun to see. She said it cost $50. We held it up to Rachel in hopes that she could try it on but it was too small! Grandma was so tiny when they got married and she is still tiny enough to wear it! There was a photo that grandma had sent grandpa when they were writing and before they had met. Becca asked grandpa what he thought when he saw the photo, he said he went right into orbit! So cute! No trip to Walla Walla would be complete without watching one of our favorite movies.
The Labyrinth! Teo wanted to watch it with us and he got a little worried at parts. I never thought of this movie as being scary but I guess the puppets in some parts are kind of freaky. He liked it so much that when the rest of us were falling asleep, he was wide awake and didn't want to turn it off. We had to watch it in two nights to finish it. David Bowie is something else in this movie. He has crazy makeup, big hair and tight pants. Apparently they were thinking about having Michael Jackson play the part. Now that would have been scary! I couldn't imagine anyone else in the part. "You remind me of the babe!"
It's strange being back in Walla Walla after so long and it's sad to see that a lot of the things and places that we used to enjoy are no longer there. It sure brings back a lot of good memories from our childhood. It's too bad that Chris didn't come to see the old stomping grounds but after the first day, I quickly realized that it was a good choice for him because he would have been bored most of the time. My family likes to lay around and do nothing and just talk. This is probably why we also tend to fall asleep at family functions!
