The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater

The Scorpio Races

From the author of Shiver, this teen fantasy deals with the mythical water horse. Every year the island has the Scorpio Races, an event where many will die and the winner will win a lot of money. The book follows two characters with their own reasons for wanting to win the races. Sean is a young man who has a gift with horses and works for the richest man on the island. He is the winner of the last four years and is racing for ownership of the water horse that is his by right. Puck is a young girl who is drawn into the race as a last effort at keeping her family together. Orphaned when their parents were killed by a water horse, Puck and her two brothers have had to struggle to make ends meet. When her older brother decides to leave the island, and with the treat of losing their house, Puck hopes the prize money will fix all her problems. Puck faces many obstacles being the first girl to ever ride in the races. She also decides to take a chance by riding her own regular horse in a race of dangerous man eating water horses. Puck and Sean form a friendship and you see their romance coming before you even start the book.

This book is extremely slow going. There are a few attempts at action that I thought were anticlimactic. I honestly don't know if I would have finished this book if I didn't listen to it on audio.
