As Octavian invades Egypt, Marc Antony and Cleopatra take their own lives leaving their young children. This historical fiction follows the lives of the 10 year old twins, Selene and Alexander as they are taken back to Rome as prisoners. They live with Octavian's sister Octavia, the woman their father Marc Antony was married to and left for their mother. Despite this, she is very kind to them. They are raised with her son Marcellus and Octavian's daughter Julia. You see Rome through the eyes of Selene and the injustices done to the slaves. You watch the twins through the book what they learn and as they fall in love with people they can't be with. Through all this the twins know they must watch out for Octavian because he is willing to kill anyone who threatens his power as Caesar.
I found this book interesting and made me want to read more about Ancient Egypt and Rome.
