This is not your typical holocaust story. Narrated by Death, the story of a German girl named Liesel unfolds. When Liesel is 10 years old she is sent to a foster home by her mother. Her little brother dies on the way. At his funeral she steals her first book, a grave digger's handbook, that has been accidentally left behind. She doesn't know how to read and soon her foster father begins to teach her. Her desire to read is so great, it begins her history of being a book thief. Book thieving is only part of this story. It also gives the perspective of what it was like to live in Nazi Germany and are hiding a Jew in your basement. This is a story about love, loss, determination and the human spirit. It is a touching story that will make you laugh and cry. I highly recommend it.
