Apparently this is a bestselling novel in the UK but it hasn't made it's mark here. For those of you who like 19th century romances, this is one for you. I was pleasantly surprised because there was a bit of mystery to it as well. I was a little disappointed in the ending because I wanted to see what happened to the characters afterward and felt like it ended pretty abruptly.
At a young age, main character Mariella, meets her cousin Rosa and quickly become best friends. Later, when they are older, after Rosa's step father dies leaving her and her mother destitute, they come to live with Mariella and her family. Mariella is engaged to a young surgeon, Henry, who is her childhood love. The Crimean War breaks out taking Henry away to serve as a doctor. Shortly after, Rosa decides to leave to be a nurse in the war efforts. After a while Mariella receives a letter saying that Henry is very ill and she rushes to Italy only to find Henry in a mad state. In his delirium, he confuses her with Rosa and is overcome with passion. Mariella is left hurt and confused. She finds out that Rosa is missing and Henry is in no state to tell her the truth. The story unfolds as Mariella risks her life looking for Rosa and answers to what happened between Rosa and Henry. It also flashes back to the period when Mariella first met Rosa, as a child.
