I've heard some great things about this book but I could only read it a little bit at a time. All this fragmented reading probably didn't help at parts when the book had a slower pace. Toward the end, things started falling into place and the action started picking up.
The book starts off in revolutionary Russia with a starving family of a mother and two sons. While out hunting for food (a cat), one of the boys is abducted by a man. Then the book picks up about 20 years later to the character, Leo, a MGB officer who is told to silence a family who believes their son was murdered. In a Russia under Stalin's rule, murder and crime isn't supposed to happen. Under the threat of being arrested, the family finally agrees that their son was killed in an accident. Later, Leo comes across another child killed in the same circumstance and believes it's the work of one man. As he starts to investigate the murders of multiple children, he has a more dangerous enemy than the serial killer he is tracking. His own government is chasing him because these murders were already solved blaming innocent people. By solving the murders, he is undermining the government and risking his life.
