I decided to pick up this book on Friday night and I couldn't put it down! James Dashner is a local author who usually writes young reader fiction. This book is teen and has been picked as one of Barnes & Noble's Discover New Writers authors for this winter. The book is fast paced and chapter after chapter I found myself not wanting to put it down. I was so wrapped up in the story that I stayed up until 4 am this morning reading after getting home from work at midnight! This book can easily appeal to teen boys which is hard to find since a lot of teen books right now are marketed to girls and have a vampire theme. If you've read The Hunger Games, you'll definitely love this book too.
About the book:
16 year old Thomas wakes up in a box chamber not remembering anything. The chamber is moving upward like an elevator and when it opens, he is surrounded by a group of teenaged boys. He is apparently the "newbie", the newest boy sent once a month to a settlement called "The Glade". All the boys had been sent there by people they called "The Creators", and none of them could remember anything but their names. Thomas is confused and is left with many questions, and nobody is too eager to offer any answers. He discovers that The Glade is surrounded by stone walls which have openings around it and beyond that, is a maze. Every day, Runners enter the maze to try and find a way out. Problem is, the entrances to the maze close every night and the walls move. Not only that, there are deadly mechanical creatures inside. The Runners hadn't found a way out of the maze in 2 years. Things really start getting crazy when the day after Thomas arrives, The Creators send someone else, a girl. Not only is this out of character for The Creators to send more than one person a month, she is the only girl ever to be sent. When the chamber opens, everyone thinks she is dead but she sits up long enough to deliver a message before she falls back into a coma. The message: Things are going to change.
