This was the final book in the series and picks up right where The Girl who Played with Fire leaves off. In The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, it mainly follows character Mikael Blomkvist, in Played with Fire and Hornet's Nest, they chiefly follow character Lisbeth Salander and only briefly touch on things that happened in Dragon Tattoo.

Played with Fire leaves us with Lisbeth shot in the head by her father. Hornet's Nest picks up right after Mikael finds her and the events following. Lisbeth is under arrest for attempted murder. Throughout the book Mikael tries to help prove Lisbeth's innocence but also has to prove the existence and actions of a secret government organization. In Played with Fire you find out that Lisbeth's father was a defected Russian agent who provided secrets to the secret government agency. The agency covered up all her father's crimes and gave him another identity. Lisbeth tried to kill her father, when she was a little girl, to try and protect her mother from his abuse. The agency arranged to have her locked up in a mental institute and declared her mentally incompetent, in order to keep her from leaking her father's real identity and the agency's involvement. At this point the agency is trying to cover it's tracks and make it so that Lisbeth is locked up for the rest of her life.
What I like about this book is it really shows the emotional development of Lisbeth. In Played with Fire, Lisbeth starts to evolve from a person who has been betrayed throughout her entire life and has lived her life not trusting anyone. She also keeps herself from feeling any real emotion other than anger, and also distances herself from establishing any type of relationship. For the first time in Lisbeth's life, she is forced to trust people and realizes that she has friends that care about her. As the book progresses, you can see her changing and finally opening up.
I really enjoyed these books and am curious to see who is cast to play Lisbeth. I can see how people can get really protective over a character and who is cast to play them. I'm just crossing my fingers that it's anyone but Kristin Stewart. I would prefer it to be an actress that isn't currently a big name but I'll take anyone but "the mouth breather", which is what my boss calls her. ;) Lisbeth's a skinny little girl who has lived an awful life but has somehow come out as a fighter. She's a mathematical and computer genius. In Played with Fire she hacks the bad guy's bank account and steals his money. She gets revenge on anyone who crosses her. She also doesn't let her size keep her from beating up any thugs that get in her way. Lisbeth is two thirds kick a** and one third the emotionally damaged underdog, which makes her one of my favorite heroines of all time.
