This book is part of a trilogy that came out a while ago and I only decided to read it because the third book is coming out soon. A few people at work said they liked it and I decided to give it a try since it also received good reviews. It was published in Sweden and was a bestseller in Europe. The author died shortly after turning in the manuscripts to all three books. Trying to pronounce all the Swedish names was a struggle and I was shocked when a murder victim in the book had the last name Sjoberg. See what happens when you read Swedish books? ha ha! A "Hansen" wouldn't have even made me bat an eye!
The book follows Mikael Blomkvist, a disgraced financial reporter, who has been hired by a wealthy businessman to find out the truth about his niece who disappeared forty years ago and is believed to have been murdered. The book's other main character is Lisbeth Salander (the girl with the dragon tattoo), who is a troubled girl in her 20's. She works as a freelance researcher for a security firm. She is hired to collect intel on Mikael and the story takes a twist when she is suddenly hired by him to help her with the case of the missing girl. Together they discover a dark family secret that lay hidden for many years.
The book was really good but is not a good choice for conservative types because of language and some sexual brutality. This was made into a movie in Sweden and they are going to be making an American adaptation. Kristen Stewart is interested in playing Lisbeth. Ugh! I've had enough of her! The original Swedish title of the book is Men Who Hate Women. For some reason they changed the titles for the American market. The third book changed from the Swedish title The Air Castle that Blew Up, to The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest. The only one unchanged was The Girl Who Played with Fire.
