I listened to this on audio and wasn't impressed with the girl who read it. The tone and quality of her voice didn't express the emotions happening in the book. This is the reason for the lower star rating. This book didn't have the emotional punch as some of the other stories that I've read about the Holocaust which is similar in theme. During the period around WWII, Josef Stalin's regime rounded up people they deemed as anti Soviet. Some of the reasons being that they were doctors, teachers, librarians, and even children. Millions were imprisoned, killed, or forced to work in labor camps where they died. Even after the ordeal was over, people were afraid to tell their stories. Between this and the atrocities carried out by Hitler, many have no idea this even took place. The author wrote this book in remembrance of her grandfather.
Synopsis:
Lina is a 15 year old Lithuanian girl whose family is taken in a cattle car to a labor camp and then later moved to Siberia. Separated from her father, who is put in a prison, she copes with life by drawing pictures of her experience. Through her imprisonment, she finds love and also learns that there are good people among her enemies.
